The Gap Between What's Written and What's Actually Happening in the Classroom

Quick test: can your child tell you one specific thing that happened in speech, OT, or their pull-out support this week?

Not "it was fine." An actual detail.

If they can't, and you can't either, we need to talk.

Here's a truth I learned the hard way as a classroom teacher long before I became an advocate…

An IEP is a promise on paper, and paper doesn't deliver services. People do. And people get pulled for coverage, therapists get reassigned mid-year, and paraprofessionals go out on leave without anyone updating you. None of that is necessarily malicious. Most of it is a scheduling nightmare nobody warned you about. But your child doesn't get those missed minutes back just because the reason was reasonable.

This isn't an autism problem or a dyslexia problem or an ADHD problem. It's a paperwork versus practice problem, and it touches every single diagnosis on an IEP. The service minutes on page four of that document are legally binding, whether your child is working on articulation, reading fluency, executive functioning, or self-regulation.

October is exactly the right month to check. Report cards are landing. The "new class, new routine" chaos of the first six weeks has settled. And if a service has been quietly skipped since August, right now is when the pattern becomes visible, before it becomes a semester's worth of lost progress.

Your October checklist:

  • Request the service log for every related service on the IEP. The actual document, not a verbal "yes, we're doing it."

  • Ask your child, casually, at dinner: "What did you and Mr/Ms ___ work on today?" Do this three days this week.

  • If a service has been missed more than twice, put the request for a written explanation and a make-up plan in writing. In writing always beats a hallway conversation.

This is one of the most common (and most fixable) issues I see across every single diagnosis category.

If you're already seeing gaps and don't want to wait a month to fix them, don't.

This is the exact kind of quiet slippage that a membership with IEP Partner is built to catch. We track your child's services and data all year, not just at the annual review.

Schedule your free 15-minute discovery call and let's close the gap before it costs your child a semester.
